1. Spiritual & Mental Preparedness (The Foundation)
- Bible (multiple copies) – both print and digital versions (with solar/dynamo charger for devices). Although the digital bible may be convenient, it can fail when infrastructure is compromised. Your print copy of your bible will be the most beneficial during times of crisis because it will be readily accessible without electricity or internet. It will be a tangible source of comfort, and offer a distraction-free way to focus on faith.
- Prayer journal & devotionals – to keep the heart steady in Christ. They provide stability, comfort, and focus by anchoring individuals in their faith.
- Pocket-sized Scripture cards – portable encouragement for family and others. They are a readily accessible spiritual and psychological comfort when other resources are unavailable.
- Anointing oil – symbolic, but also a point of faith during a crisis. It serves as a tangible symbol of faith and spiritual authority, something that you can see and touch and use in agreement with and as a prophetic action for the thing that you are believing the Father for.
- Christian survival/devotional books – on faith, hope, perseverance, and wisdom. They will provide spiritual nourishment, hope, and an eternal perspective that anchors faith beyond worldly circumstances. These books will offer guidance and comfort rooted in biblical truths, helping Christians navigate traumatic events by focusing on God’s promises instead of their fears.
- Mindset preparation resources – stress management, trauma response guides. It will help reduce fear, build resilience, and provide a faith-based framework for response. While physical preparation for emergencies is vital, a believer’s spiritual and mental readiness provides a crucial inner anchor when worldly circumstances are uncertain.
- Community & fellowship plan – identify trusted believers nearby for prayer, support, and accountability. It will provide spiritual, emotional, and practical support that strengthens resilience and fosters recovery.
Why?: A prepared heart anchored in Christ will remain stable even when the world shakes (Hebrews 12:28).
2. Food & Water Security
- Long-term food storage (freeze-dried meals, dehydrated foods, canned goods).
- Manual can opener (heavy-duty, smooth-edge).
- Portable water filters (LifeStraw, Sawyer Mini).
- Water purification tablets/drops (chlorine dioxide, iodine).
- Collapsible water containers for storage and transport.
- Rainwater collection system (barrels, filtration setup).
- Cooking tools – dual-fuel portable stove (propane & butane), mess kits, utensils.
- Seeds for gardening (heirloom/non-GMO, long shelf life).
- Basic knowledge of food foraging (regional wild edibles guidebook).
Why?: Joseph’s storehouse principle (Genesis 41) shows the wisdom of storing provisions for famine or disruption.
3. Shelter & Warmth
- Emergency blankets (Mylar) – used to retain body heat.
- Emergency sleeping bags – compact, waterproof, thermal-lined.
- Portable emergency tent – lightweight, weather-resistant.
- Durable tarp & paracord – multipurpose (shelter, covering, repair).
- Cold-weather gear – thermal socks, gloves, hats, coats.
- Multi-season sleeping pad/mat – for insulation from cold ground.
- Fire-starting tools – waterproof matches, ferro rod, lighters.
Why?: Shelter and warmth preserve life (Lamentations 4:9–10 shows the harsh reality of exposure during siege).
4. Light & Power
- Rechargeable LED flashlights (with zoom + high lumens).
- Headlamps – hands-free lighting.
- Solar-powered lanterns (collapsible, lightweight).
- Portable power station (88Wh+ with AC outlets).
- Solar panels (foldable) for recharging devices.
- Surge-protected power strip – to manage multiple devices when power source is limited.
- Backup batteries & USB charging banks.
Why?: “The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light; upon those living in the region, in the shadow of death, light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:16). Having literal light in chaos shines light on spiritual truth.
5. Health & First Aid
- Comprehensive first aid kit (bandages, gauze, antiseptics, splints).
- Medical survival books (like Where There Is No Doctor).
- Over-the-counter medicines (pain relievers, allergy meds, antacids, cold/flu relief, electrolyte packets).
- Travel-size medicine variety kit – portable essentials for headaches, nausea, etc.
- Prescription backups – at least 30–90 days if possible.
- Masks & gloves – N95 masks for smoke, pandemics, or dust.
- Sanitation & hygiene items – soap, toothpaste, feminine care, wipes, hand sanitizer.
- Essential oils & natural remedies (tea tree, peppermint, lavender for multipurpose use).
Why?: Caring for the body is stewardship of God’s temple (1 Cor. 6:19–20).
6. Tools & Equipment
- Multitool (17-in-1 or higher) – pliers, knife, screwdriver, saw, etc.
- Fixed-blade survival knife – durable, full-tang for cutting, hunting, defense.
- Compact shovel & hatchet – for digging, chopping, or shelter building.
- Duct tape & zip ties – multipurpose fixes and repairs.
- Rope/paracord – strong, lightweight, endless uses.
- Sewing kit – for gear/clothing repair.
- Portable water-resistant backpack/duffel – for go-bag setup.
Why?: Nehemiah rebuilt the walls with both tools and weapons in hand (Nehemiah 4:17). Preparedness requires both building and defense.
7. Communication & Navigation
- Emergency radio (hand-crank, solar, and battery options).
- Whistles – for signaling help. Small, portable bull horns will be another useful resource for communicating as well.
- Maps (local & regional) – don’t rely solely on GPS. Have physical maps of your local area on hand in case of topography disruption.
- Compass – basic navigation backup.
- Notebook + pens/pencils – recording information, plans, Scripture.
- Walkie-talkies (FRS/GMRS radios) – local communication if cell towers fail.
- Celestial Navigation – Celestial navigation is a crucial, non-electronic backup for determining location when modern technology fails due to equipment failure, power outages, or solar flares. Navigators use celestial bodies—primarily the sun, moon, planets, and certain stars—as reference points to calculate their position on Earth. This process typically requires a few basic tools and knowledge.
Why?: Clear communication brings unity and direction (1 Corinthians 14:33).
8. Defense & Security
- Personal protection items – (pepper spray, tactical flashlight, self-defense tools).
- Sturdy locks, bars, or reinforcements – for home entry points.
- Situational awareness training – avoiding danger is often better than confronting it.
- Optional: Legal defensive weapons – (firearm with training, depending on conviction and laws).
Why?: Luke 22:36 reminds us that Jesus acknowledged practical defense in a dangerous world. Balance faith with wisdom.
9. Financials & Documentation
- Cash on hand – small bills, in case banks/ATMs are down.
- Important documents – IDs, passports, medical info, insurance, birth certificates, social security cards, in a waterproof pouch.
- Emergency contacts list – family, friends, medical personnel, printed and stored safely in a waterproof pouch.
- Barter items – extra supplies that could be traded (batteries, lighters, food packets, drinks, honey, coconut oil, peanut butter, seeds for growing food, tools and repair materials like duct tape, nails and screws, medical and personal hygiene supplies, ammunition and skilled labor).
Why?: Joseph stored not only grain, but also administered resources for exchange in crisis (Genesis 47).
10. Community & Outreach
- Extra Bibles & tracts – to encourage and evangelize during crisis.
- Shared supply agreements – build a trusted circle of believers who prepare together and establish physical locations that will serve as hubs for community outreach.
- Skills training – learn gardening, first aid, carpentry, or water purification.
- Volunteer readiness – position yourself to bless others, not just survive.
Why?: We are blessed to be a blessing (Genesis 12:2). Preparedness empowers ministry in chaos. The Body of Christ should be prepared to not only help each other in the time of crisis, but we should be able to extend a helping hand to those around us who are also in need as well! The Body of Christ is GLOBAL! If we all join forces and come together as a body in our respective global locations, then there is nothing that we (as a body) wouldn’t be able to accomplish! And that includes being able to be sustained during a time of crisis!
Summary
A believer’s disaster preparedness kit should cover spiritual, physical, mental, and community needs. Oftentimes, we take our cues and suggestions from the world as to how to prepare for times of disaster and crisis. Now, we can say as Believer’s in the Lord Jesus Christ that we are just as aware as the world is when it comes to disaster preparedness. It’s not just about surviving — it’s about thriving in Christ, standing as a pillar of hope, and ministering in the darkest times. This resource serves as a tool that the Believer can use as a reference when it comes to making decisions about what is needed to survive during trying times. I encourage you to not only use this resource, but share this with someone, and everyone who will take heed to the thought of the importance of the not only the world, but Believers need to be well equipped to survive and maintain during times of disaster and crisis!
